HONESTY

"Behold, you desire truth in the inward
parts, and in the hidden part You will make
me to know wisdom" (Psalms 5:16).

We live in a generation that counts honesty a thing that is passe. It is not unusual at all for us to hear of broken promises, and outright deception; all with the exuse that it really doesn't matter, for it is no one else's business. However, when we look to the Lord, we see that He was not only honest Himself, but that he required honesty of those who would follow him.

In relating the parable of the Unjust Steward, Jesus said, "He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much" (Luke 16:10). If one cannot be trusted in the smallest of things, then he certainly cannot be trusted in the greater matters.

In his discourse on the behavior of Christiains, Paul had this to say. "Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men" (Romans 12:17). He also stressed this need for honesty in all the endeavors of Christian character. "Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in licentiousness and lewdness, not in strife and envy" (Romans 13:13).

Jesus, of course, is the perfect example of such fidelity. Those who would be His followers must maintain that quality also. "Therefore, putting away lying, each one speak truth with his neighbor, for we are members of one another" (Ephesians 4:25).

What will make life as it should be? Listen to what the apostle said about our meditations: "Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praisworthy -- meditate on thest things" (Philippians 4:8). Thus, there is no place for the dishonest and negative things of life in the lives of Christians.
