VOLUME VIII                JANUARY 31, 2010                NUMBER 36

From the pen of Leroy Sedgwick...

“Jesus advanced in wisdom and height and
in favor with God and men” (Luke 2:53).

EDUCATION

Part two! Having noted the need for character and morals in the lives of those teaching our youth, let us carry this just a bit further, discussing the curriculum.
Again, I rely on those who are more in the know about these things than I am. The following two statements come from those who are very much into the educational process. I share them, because if they are just partially true, they are frightening.
Dr. Henry Morris said that “the public school system in its present form has become perhaps the greatest of all influences away from God and His truth in America.”
Writing for the humanists, Paul Blanchard (along about the same time) said, “The most important factor moving us toward a secular society has been the educational factor. Our schools may not teach Johnny to read properly, but the fact that Johnny is in school until he is sixteen tends to lead toward the elimination of religious superstition. The average American child now acquires a high school education and this militates against Adam and Eve and all other myths of alleged history.” While these two quotes are rather old, the sentiment is still there.
If there is even a smidgen of truth in what these men say, we should be alarmed. The intention of the Humanist movement is, and has always been, to destroy all faith in those things we have held sacred every since this nation was founded, and upon which principles it was founded.
As Christians, we must hold up the banner of truth and righteousness in a world that is on a collision course with total moral and spiritual and ethical destruction. Thank the Lord that there are those Christians in the system who speak truth. Encourage them all you can and let them know that you stand behind them.

When we place our contribution in the contribution plate, we are not giving to the Lord so much as we are just taking our hands off what already belongs to Him.

Both faith and fear sail into
the harbor of your mind,
but only faith should be
allowed to anchor.

I had not heard of this until I recently heard the preacher from Lufkin preaching about it, but I certainly think it worthy to repeat. Stephen Wiggins authored the added comments at the end of the article from teh January 2010 ussye if The Spiritual Sword (p. 7).

REPORT FROM "THE GREAT COMMUNION"

We stated in the October 2009 issue of the Spiritual Sword that some were promoting “The Great Communion” on October 4, 2009, to promote unity between Christian Churches, Disciples of Christ, and churches of Christ.
One such service was conducted at Moody Coliseum at Abilene Christian University. The song before the communion was performed by a choir with instrumental accompaniment. The president at ACU participated in the service.
Another service was held at West End Church of Christ in Nashville. David Fleer of Lipscomb University was one of the speakers. The closing prayer was led by Rhonda Lowry, the wife of Lipscomb University president Randy Lowry. After the closing prayer, a Disciple of Christ French-speaking African-American vocal group performed with bongo drums.
Instrumental music in the worship. A woman leading in public prayer in the assembly. Two colleges among brethren implicated in the proceedings. Compromise with Christian Churches/Disciples of Christ. Do you see why this issue of The Spiritual Sword is dealing with “change” in the church? These events would have been shocking to our fathers and mothers, our grandparents, and our brethren of fifty years ago.
“But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ” (II Cor. 11:3).

What you have just read is indicative of the liberal element within the churches of Christ and what they are doing in compromising the purity of our practice as it pertains to New Testament Christianity. Sadly, this current compromise is being promoted by the educated among our brethren who are in charge of teaching our young people in our Christian Universities. Do not think for one moment that these brethren are not jeopardizing the soundness of the future church as well as the precious souls of our young people. Brethren of years gone by fought and repudiated the very things that now our more sophisticated brethren are embracing and promoting. Nor should you think that this compromise ends with the Christian church and Disciples of Christ. The very brethren who extend these apostates the right hand of fellowship do so just as quickly to full fledged denominationalism. What a sad day in Zion!
