Ananias had been instructed to go to Saul of Tarsus with the saving message of Christ. While it had only been a very short time - three days - since Saul's encounter with the Lord on the road to Damascus, Ananias' words were: "And now why tarriest thou?" (Acts 22:16). By the standards of many, who today put off for days and months, and even years, three days seem such a little time to be accused of "tarrying". But id does point out the urgency pressed upon us to be obedient to the will of God.
The same man, now known as Paul the apostle, later stressed this same urgency. "...that ye receive not the grace of God in vain (...behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation)" (II Corinthians 6:1-2).
Why do so many wait so long? There are those who will read this, who know that they need to respond to the plea of the Lord even now, but continue to put it off. Why do you wait?
Are you waiting for the saving power to be made known? "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth" (Romans 1:16). There is no need to wait longer. The gospel is for all.
Do you wait for convincing power? "The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul" (Psalm 19:7). Hear God's law now and obey.
Are you waiting for sanctifying power? "Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth" (John 17:17). Hear God's truth through His word, the Bible.
Are you waiting for perfecting power? "All scripture is given by inspiration of god...that the man of God may be perfect..." (Ii Timothy 3:16,17). God's perfection is available through the scriptures.
Are you waiting for faith? "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17). If you haven't the faith, you can not expect to have it until you begin to hear and respond to the things God has provided in His Holy Word.
Don't be deceived into believing that you must receive some special miraculous feeling by which you are to be saved almost against your will. Study God's word that you may know how to be pleasing to God. Why are you waiting?
