THE MIND OF CHRIST
"Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 2:5).
This is a tall order! However, it is very important that we give close attention to having the mind of Christ. It is made all the more sobering when we hear Paul say, "But if any man hath not the spirit of Christ, he is none of His" (Romans 8:9).
But what does it mean to have the mind of Christ -- to have the Spirit of Christ? While it means to think like he thought, it means much more than that. Paul probably best expressed it in these words: "...who, existing in the form of God, counted not the being on an equality with God a things to be grasped, but emptied Himself. . .He humbled Himself, becoming obedient. . ." (Philippians 2:6-8).
Because we children of Adam want to be great
HE BECAME SMALL.
Because we are always seeking to climb higher
HE STEPPED DOWN.
Because we will not stoop
HE HUMBLED HIMSELF.
Because we want to rule
HE CAME TO SERVE.
Jesus, Himself, summed up the whole of His life in these words: "For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of Him that sent me" (John 6:38).
Though He had existed always, and it was by Him that the worlds were created (cf. Hebrews 1:2), He was still the very epitome of humble obedience. And having "learned obedience by the things which He suffered: and having been made perfect, He became to all men who obey Him the author of eternal salvation" (Hebrews 5:8,9).
Thus, summing up -- if we would have in us the mind of Christ, it would involve (among other things) that humility of obedience that He showed us. Our eternal salvation depends on it!
