The Christmas holiday period seems so far away by now, but we hope that each of you had a wonderful time with family and friends. We were blessed to have both children, my parents, and a family from Ireland at our table on Christmas day. Our friends from Cork, Ireland, stayed for just over two weeks and we were indeed sorry to see them go. Ann and I thank each of you who sent cards and newsletters. We simply can't respond to them all, but we do read and appreciate them so very much.
This letter begins with family news as so many of you are asking about Ann's health.
Andre did quite well in university last term. He is majoring in graphic design. Elise was accepted into a good cosmetology school, and hopes to begin her classes in May. She continues to work in the Montessori school with Ann. For several years, Elise has enjoyed doing the hair and nails of her friends, and has wanted to attend this school for some time. I jokingly call her the Fashion Sheriff! The course to qualify lasts a year, but is very expensive and I think there is supervised work after it is finished. ext letter.
Never have I given away so many cards to people whoBrother Vagia, a preacher for the Church in another region of India has also begun a work with blind people in his area. We are in the process of sending over forty boxes of Bibles in the Telugu language to him.
Because of the terrible political, economic, and social situation in Zimbabwe, we are currently receiving far less mail from that country than we were some months ago. Because of new government regulations, it is even difficult to get money into the country to help them, but we have sent some funds through missionaries who visit that nation. We do get some letters however, and the last email informed us that Jacob, a new blind Christian is well, and has been hired as a teacher. He of course, is suffering with the rest of the nation with inflation of well over 1,000 percent.
We are trying to expand our website to include audio lessons, and hope to have this done in the next several months. Meanwhile, I am studying with several blind people on the Internet. The lessons are recorded and we are working to get them on CD. I continue doing topical studies once a week in most cases.
The Courier talking Bible is becoming very popular among the blind, and since our last letter, we have sent 1 to Sweden, 2 to Canada, and several to various parts of the US. The entire Bible is contained in one small box about the size of a cassette, and this means that the listener, using headphones or a speaker, can access any scripture in seconds. All these contacts have been made via the Internet. We have a prayer and Bible reading group most mornings. Many states and countries, as well as several denominations are represented and this affords a fantastic teaching opportunity.
When Ann opened the mortgage coupon book in January, we got quite an unpleasant surprise! Because of rising home insurance rates, our monthly payments went from $1046 to $1270. We are trying to negotiate a better home insurance rate, but many people are experiencing steep increases, and so far we have not managed to do much better.
In closing, I ask for your prayers for this ministry, our family, and my frequent travels. As I write this, I am in Seattle, and am mainly here to visit a Christian who is blind and who has been a real friend, both to me, and to this ministry. She is in her mid fifties, and has been given only a few months to live, as a result of a brain tumor. She is aware of her situation and knows that soon, she will be going to a far better home.
I also have speaking in Ohio before returning to Louisiana for several weeks. God willing, I will be traveling, teaching, and speaking in Europe from near the end of April, through the summer. Circumstances permitting, Ann hopes to join me for six weeks, after helping with a Church camp in early June, and leading a youth group to the Uplift week at Harding.
We can never thank each of you enough for all that you do to make this ministry possible. This fact is especially true because end of year contributions were lower this year than in past years. We both use and need these one-time contributions, along with monthly support, to provide funding for the year. May God guide, protect, strengthen, and bless you in every way.
In Christ with thanks,
Glynn, Ann, Andre, and Elise Langston
